DONATE A QUILT, QUILT TOP OR RELATED TEXTILE MATERIALS

The New England Quilt Museum welcomes inquiries about donations of quilts, quilt tops and related textile and sewing items. The majority of the items in the Permanent Collection were acquired through the generosity of donors.

If you are interested in donating an item, we request that you first contact the Collections Manager by mail or email (collections@nequiltmuseum.org). Supply as much information as you have about the item that you wish to donate, including photographs if possible. Please include your home address, telephone number and email so that we may contact you.

CRITERIA
Many aspects may be taken into consideration when deciding if an item is suitable for the Permanent Collection. Among them are:

      - where the item was made or used;
      - the item's historical significance;
      - a well-documented family history'
      - if the item supports other pieces already in the collection;
      - in the case of a contemporary art quilt, if its maker is a recognized artist;
      - the item's condition and conservation needs.

COLLECTION COMMITTEE
If, after receiving your inquiry, we determine that it should be brought before the Collection Committee for consideration, we will ask you to send or bring it to the museum. The Collection Committee meets twice a year to consider possible acquisitions.

AFTER THE ITEM IS ACCEPTED
If the Collection Committee's makes a positive decision to accept a donated item, a letter of acceptance and Deed of Gift will be sent to the owner. Once the Deed of Gift is signed, witnessed and returned to the museum, the item become the property of the New England Quilt Museum. The item will them be exhibited periodically or used for study purposes as determined by Curatorial and Collections staff. Acknowledgement of the gift will be made in LAYERS, the quarterly newsletter of the museum and whenever the item is used on display or in museum publications.

YOUR DONATION IS TAX DEDUCTIBLE
The New England Quilt Museum is a 501(c)3 charity. It does not provide appraisals but can furnish you with a list of certified appraisers. The IRS requires that you include Form 8263 (available from the IRS or your accountant) with your tax return if  you claim the value of the gift to exceed $500  (as well as a copy of the appraisal if your item is valued at more than $5,000).
